SMA Solar Academy Instructors

Greg Smith

Greg Smith has been a technical training specialist for the SMA Solar Academy since May 2008. He has 20 years of technical training experience specializing in curriculum development. Greg travels extensively in the United States and Canada teaching customers about SMA products, electrical code compliance and installation best practices. Greg, who holds a master’s degree in human resources administration from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in corporate training, spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a submarine sonar technician and master training specialist prior to his career at SMA.

Ben Castillo

Ben Castillo is a technical training specialist for SMA America’s Solar Academy. Prior to joining SMA in 2008, Ben worked as a trainer for Bell Labs Lucent Technologies, where his specialties included environmental health and safety, employee development, fiber optics and central office back-up power systems. Ben has 15 years of experience as a trainer. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from California State University, Chico.

Mike Mahon

Mike Mahon is a technical training specialist with the SMA Solar Academy, delivering in-person training and webinars covering SMA products and the basics of photovoltaics. Prior to joining SMA in 2011, Mike taught NABCEP Entry Level Exam preparation and PV installation and design classes for private firms and also to members of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. Mike holds a PhD in chemical engineering and a master's in electrical engineering, and has worked in the energy industry since 1998.
