San Antonio

Currently the third-largest PV power plant in the USA, Duke Energy Renewables‘ Blue Wing Solar Project is located in one of the sunniest regions of the North American continent, in San Antonio, Texas. On an area of more than 45 hectares, the Blue Wing solar farm generates up to 26,000 MWh of electricity – enough to supply 1,800 households with energy.

The PV power plant was developed and built in seven months by juwi solar, before it was consigned to Duke Energy Renewables, a commercial business unit of Duke Energy Corp. A 30-year contract with municipal electric utility CPS Energy guarantees Duke Energy Renewables a locked-in revenue stream and the customer a guaranteed supply of zero-emission electricity. With the Blue Wing Solar Project, CPS Energy further expands its share of clean energy for its customers.

A total of 214,500 First Solar thin-film modules provide a nominal power of around 6 megawatts. The conversion in grid compatible alternating current is performed by 22 Sunny Central 630 HE-US inverters by SMA. Furthermore, comprensive system technology actively supports grid stabilization on demand and helps ensure highest availability for the operator. In addition, all processes in the plant are constantly monitored.
