SMA Technologie AG was founded in 1981 as a spin-off of the University in Kassel. The founders pursued their vision of developing and producing intelligent computer-based control systems for decentralized energy supply. This vision resulted in sophisticated products that are fail-safe and extremely reliable. In an energy supply system it is especially important that long-term, trouble-free operation is guaranteed.

SMA America’s office in California supplies the renewable energy markets in North and South America with the most efficient and reliable inverters available and was founded in 2000 in order to provide superior service to the growing North American Customer base and to ensure that SMA is completely harmonized with the market needs of the Americans.

Our expertise has grown over the past 25 years and our experience in the development and fabrication of systems technology for photovoltaics, wind energy and combined power generation plants, is considerable.  Our processes have benefited from continuous product improvements and the use of state-of-the-art technologies. SMA was a pioneer in the field of solar technology and today sets the standards for decentralized power supply systems. This leadership position has been supported by close cooperation with ISET (the “Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik”).

The "Sunny Boy" inverter has made SMA the world market leader in the field of innovative device technology for renewable energy sources. Private, commercial and institutional owners of solar power plants rely on our photovoltaic inverters and numerous possibilities for a wide range of different communication systems. Our state of the art electronics manufacturing processes ensure the quality, reliability and up-to-date technology of our products.

In addition, our customers benefit from our extensive cooperation with other specialists in the field of industrial computers. We have developed extremely complex control units that meet highest demands for ruggedness, reliability and long-term availability in various industrial plants and vehicles. Our long-standing experience in the field of power electronic components and computer-based systems enables our Railway Technology Division to design and equip the electrical systems of entire trains.
