Garrett Yazzie, a 13-year-old Navajo boy living in Pinon, Arizona, used to keep his family warm using an improvised passive solar heater he devised, with a little help from the internet, from an old automobile radiator, aluminum cans and some sheets of glass. Thanks to SMA America and the crew at Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the makeshift solar heater recently received an “upgrade”.

From a humble single-wide trailer to a new solar and wind powered estate, the Yazzie’s new home is not only stunning, but was built in harmony with the Navajo principles of honoring Father Sky and Mother Earth through its construction techniques and the inclusion of sustainable energy solutions.

Two racks of solar modules paired with a set of Sunny Boy 3800U inverters provide the Yazzie family with an abundance of solar power for their new dream home.

This fall, college students from across the globe demonstrated that all exceptional solar-powered homes have one thing in common: SMA’s Sunny Boy and Sunny Island line of innovative inverters.

During the week of October 12, nearly 20,000 visitors gathered on the National Mall in Washington D.C. for the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2007 Solar Decathlon, a competition in which 20 college and university teams compete to design and build the most attractive, effective and energy efficient solar-powered home.

Although each team’s concept was unique, those that used SMA products dominated the competition. Six of the 20 contenders, including the first-, third- and fourth-place finishers, utilized products from SMA. The top teams earned high marks in categories such as Energy Balance, Architecture and Engineering.
