No, the SMA Energy Meter does not need to be physically connected to the Sunny Boy Smart Energy. However, the SMA Energy Meter must be physically connected via Cat 5/6 Ethernet cable to the router or inverter.

No, the SMA Energy Meter does not communicate via Wi-Fi. It connects to the home’s local area network (LAN) via an Ethernet cable. Although it doesn't need to be physically connected to the inverter, it must be connected to the home or building’s LAN network. The SMA Energy meter can be:

• Hardwired directly to the SMA Sunny Boy Smart Energy inverter, which has two LAN ports

• Hardwired directly to home’s router, via LAN port(s)

• Hardwired to a network range extender or Wi-Fi repeater

Yes, a backup option using RS485 cable, direct from the SMA Energy Meter to the Sunny Boy Smart Energy inverter can be used. The installer must provide the RS485 cable and terminate properly each end – one at the SMA Energy Meter and one at the Sunny Boy Smart Energy inverter (see installation manual).

No, the SMA Energy Meter is not compatible with a 3 phase, 480V system. We recommend using the Sunny Tripower CORE1 and Sunny Tripower X inverters, Data Manager M and approved 3rd-party meters instead.

The SMA Energy meter is designed for use cases in measuring home consumption in most US homes. Custom setups that may include adding a parallel set of CTs to measure a second electrical panel, custom CTs (larger, solid core, Rogowski type, etc.), remote monitoring, or multiple energy meters in one system - are currently not supported, nor tested.
